Clarke describes the supernatural with careful detail. The novel's language is a pastiche of 19th-century writing styles, such as those of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. The narrative draws on various Romantic literary traditions, such as the comedy of manners, the Gothic tale, and the Byronic hero. It inverts the Industrial Revolution conception of the North–South divide in England: in this book the North is romantic and magical, rather than rational and concrete. It has been described as a fantasy novel, an alternative history, and a historical novel. Centred on the relationship between these two men, the novel investigates the nature of "Englishness" and the boundaries between reason and unreason, Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Dane, and Northern and Southern English cultural tropes/stereotypes. Its premise is that magic once existed in England and has returned with two men: Gilbert Norrell and Jonathan Strange. Published in 2004, it is an alternative history set in 19th-century England around the time of the Napoleonic Wars. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is the debut novel by British writer Susanna Clarke.

Knickers in a Twist was written for Goodread’s M/M Romance group 2014 Love’s Landscapes event. It's not overly interesting and doesn't really belong in the quintet in my opinion.ĥ) Murali Reviewed in India 5 of 5 stars Great book. Why would you choose to have it be about earth and have it be about lame Bible times? It's a waste to me. Secondly SPOILERS AHEAD- if you create a universe for yourself (as she did with wrinkle in time) where you could write pretty much WHATEVER you wanted about ANYTHING in space and time etc. Ok first of all this is the 4th book in the series not 3rd. I really enjoyed it.Ģ) Tee Jay Reviewed in Canada 5 of 5 stars - Five Star - Loved these books as a youth, now we're reading them with our children.ģ) Amazon Customer Reviewed in Canada 5 of 5 stars Fantasy - good read - If you liked Wrinkle in Time, you will enjoy this bookĤ) Mama V Reviewed in Canada 2 of 5 stars Meh. And I’m not only talking about the smoking in her books. What I love about Tove Jansson’s writing is that it’s daring. Moomin characters accept people as they are and cherish their differences and little nuances that make them unique. It’s also heart warming to read how these colorful characters are always so friendly even to total strangers. The silliness is one part that makes Moomin characters so lovable and cute. Something that is very simple, but yet so true. Tove’s characters are many times silly, so it’s quite surprising when they suddenly say something really deep and philosophical about life. Even in the biggest trouble, she always finds a silver lining on every cloud. I find it hard to understand why some people consider Tove Jansson’s stories as melancholic and depressing. I’ve been reading a lot of Moomin books lately. When I decided to publish, I had to learn the process and my particular market. How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?Īs aforementioned, I was writing only for myself. However, I enjoy some science fiction and fantasy. Kim: Now I feel like a baby! Two authors this month, who wrote their first works over ten years ago. It was not until I allowed others to read the manuscript that I was prodded to publish. It was a story that I wanted to read (with diverse characters and a dense plot) that I could not find. My first novel The Rise of Nazil was written approximately fifteen years ago. How did you start writing? What was your inspiration to create? I really need to read one of your books too * flips to Amazon*. Kim: Gosh, what talent musical instruments that’s something.
