She created a strange new world for her stories – Moominvalley. And I’m not only talking about the smoking in her books. What I love about Tove Jansson’s writing is that it’s daring. Moomin characters accept people as they are and cherish their differences and little nuances that make them unique. It’s also heart warming to read how these colorful characters are always so friendly even to total strangers. The silliness is one part that makes Moomin characters so lovable and cute. Something that is very simple, but yet so true. Tove’s characters are many times silly, so it’s quite surprising when they suddenly say something really deep and philosophical about life. Even in the biggest trouble, she always finds a silver lining on every cloud. I find it hard to understand why some people consider Tove Jansson’s stories as melancholic and depressing. I’ve been reading a lot of Moomin books lately.
